Nana and Popo became well-known due to their inclusion as playable fighters in the 2001 GameCube game Super Smash Bros.
While Nana herself is the character controlled by the second player in-game, she appears as the sole climber on the Japanese, European, and American boxart for the game and is treated as having equal status with Popo. If Popo and Nana are understood to be Inuit-Yupik, then they are the first male and female Native American video game protagonists, respectively. As such, they are commonly understood to be Inuit-Yupik, being referred to as the pejorative “Eskimo” multiple times on their Wikipedia page. While their ethnicity is never explicitly stated, their game takes place in the arctic and they wear brightly colored fur parkas, pants, and boots, as well as mittens. The main characters Popo and Nana are mountain climbers who race to get to the top of a mountain summit. The video game Ice Climber is a vertical platform game developed and published my Nintendo for the NES in 1985.
